How To Play Sounds And Animations When Going Repeatedly To A Specific Slide

Marijke asked the following question:
QUESTION: I just made a PowerPoint Presentation concerning a learning program for school children. On the introduction page I made hyperlinks to several slides.
All slides have animations and sound files. All slides also have an action button with a hyperlink back to the introduction page. When you first use a hyperlink from the introduction page to a certain slide (let's say slide 4) all animations and soundfiles work perfectly.
However, when I go back with the action bullet to the introduction page and from there go again to slide 4, nothing works anymore.
Since this presentation is for children (on autorun CD-ROM) and since they have to work with this CD-ROM by themselves, I know they will go back and forth through the presentation. Can you help me with a solution for this problem? By the way, the problem occurs when the presentation is still in the computer as well as on a CD-ROM. Thank you in advance for trying to help.

ANSWER:

It is nice to hear that somebody is interested in using PowerPoint presentations for the purpose of instructing kids. I like the thought because PowerPoint is an easy tool to express the ideas that would inspire children's imagination.
I tried to make a presentation that includes hyperlinks following your instructions and yes, there is a problem when you jump from slide to slide using hyperlinks. The problem presents itself because of the particular way the animations from slide to slide are introduced.
Maybe you noticed it yourself - if you follow the link from slide 1 to slide 3 or just type the slide number (followed by enter key) directly, the animation will not be shown.
The reason for this behavior is that PowerPoint presents slides in their FINAL representation. This means that if you "jump" from slide to slide, they will be presented in the way they look after all the animations have finished. This of course, presents a problem if we want exactly that - to see the animation even if we "jumped" to that slide.
The solution is actually very simple.
Before each slide that contains an animation, sound or transition, you should put a blank slide with an automatic transition set to zero seconds.
To do this, go to "Slide Show>>Slide Transition..." and select "No Transition" from the list box. In the Advanced part of the window, checkmark "Automatically after" and set the value to 0. Make sure that you leave the "On the mouse click" option unchecked.
If you take a look at it now you will not notice any difference, since the inserted slides will not be visible - as they will automatically load the next slide - the slide containing your animation.
At this point you should redo your hyperlinks and connect them not to the slide that contains the animation, but to the blank slide before it. The result will be that the blank slide will become your bridge to the animation slide resulting in correct animation playback.
