How To Integrate Animated Screens From Other Applications In A PowerPoint Slide
D. Wesley asked:
QUESTION: Dear experts,
I'm wanting to use the bars visualization in windows media player during a PowerPoint presentation to demonstrate the visual dimension of three different styles of music. Each piece runs about 3.5 minutes. How do I link the media player into the presentation in order to show the movement of the music?
ANSWER: Dear Mr/Ms Wesley,
thank you for asking us this interesting question.
One possible approach would be one of first recording the audio/video in Windows Media Player through a simple screen recording tool like Camtasia (http://www.techsmith.com) or Lotus Screencam or CamStudio and including the audio in the recording if you need that as well. Once you have saved and optimized the recording you can save it as a standard .avi file which can be included as a link in any PowerPoint slide and played back during your presentation.
Here is also the opinion of my expert colleague Igor Raznatovic, who without consulting with me, came to the same conclusions.

I have to admit that your question made me think for a couple of minutes. I started immediately with the wrong ideas, so of course they sounded too complicated. Knowing that people like quality, but simple solutions I remembered that there is a great tool that I was thinking of using in my classroom.
The tool is called CamStudio (Render Software), and is free of charge. It works as a film camera that records everything that happens on the screen (or a portion of the screen) including the audio. The result will be an .avi video file that you can insert in your presentation.
This should enable you to record the portion of the Windows Media Player or some other media player that displays visualizations of the music. The program is available on the following link: http://www.rendersoftware.com. I tried recording a peace of Paganini's Rondo and the result was very good. The size of the 1 minute video clip was 8MB so this is something to keep in mind when creating the presentation.
