Display Embedded Video Clips Within A Powerpont Presentation Simultaneously On The Projector And Laptop Screens
QUESTIONS:
Dear Masterviews,
I have serious difficulties in displaying embedded video clips within my PowerPoint presentations. My questions are:
- 1. How can I display an embedded video clip within a PowerPoint presentation both on my laptop and on the projector screen simultaneously?
If I view the clip on my laptop screen, I can't see the clip on the projector screen. I see a black rectangle.
- Is it possible to embed a video clip within a slide, so that when I send my presentation via e-mail the video clip will be included to the e-mail as well?
Many thanks and regards
Alice Moreau
ANSWERS:
Dear Alice,
thank you for asking these questions that represent common problems we often encounter when we have to show presentations containing video clips.
Here are the answers:
- PowerPoint video clips work fine on the laptop, but when connected to any digital projector, movie clips (AVIs and MPEGs) do not appear on the projector screen and show just a black box.
To solve this problem, try to disable video hardware acceleration.
Here is how to do it:
For Windows 95 and 98:
- Choose Start, Settings, Control Panel.
- Double click the System icon.
- Click the Performance tab.
- Click the Graphics button.
- Move the Hardware Acceleration slider all the way to the left.
- Click OK as many times as needed to return to the desktop.
- Restart the computer if necessary.
For Windows ME:
- Right click the Windows desktop and choose Properties.
- Click the Settings tab, then click Advanced.
- Click Performance.
For Windows 2000 and XP:
- Right click the Windows desktop and choose Properties from the pop up menu.
- Click the Settings tab and then click Advanced.
- In the next dialog box, click the Troubleshoot tab.
- Under Hardware Acceleration, move the slider one level to the left.
- Click OK.
Please note that by default PowerPoint 2002 (XP) does not use Hardware Graphics Acceleration in Slide Show view. This is by design, in order to minimize the chance of video hardware and driver errors. However, you or some other user may have enabled this feature. If you experience problems during slide shows, choose Slide show, Set-Up Show and remove the check mark next to "Use hardware graphics acceleration".
If the suggestions above mentioned do not help, make the laptop display the image on the external port only: the projector screen.
To do this follow these steps:
- Press and hold the Fn key on your laptop.
- Press the function key that selects internal/external/both video displays.
This function key normally has either a single or double rectangle symbol that represent the video monitors. Now the video clip should be visible on the projector. But remember that this way you will see nothing on your laptop screen.
If you are using Windows XP...double check Slideshow>Set up show>Multiple> Monitors is set to "Primary monitor". This option will be grayed out on systems with a single graphic card.
So the best solution will be to use a dual head video card, or a second video card.
- Video clips are always linked to a presentation. They cannot be embedded within a presentation.
This way, when you email the presentation, you will need to email the video clips too. Remember that all video clips need to be saved always in the same folder.
To do this, please follow these steps:
- Create the folder you want to store your presentation and video clips in.
- Save your presentation to that folder.
- Copy video clips to the same folder.
- Insert the video clips links into your presentation from that folder.
Please be sure to move all the video clips whenever you move the presentation to another computer. If you put the video clips in the same folder together with the presentation, the links should not break and should allow viewing your video clips with no problems.
