Steps To Connect A Laptop To The Projector
QUESTION: Hi,
I have to deliver my PowerPoint presentation in Germany, in 3 weeks. Since it will be the first time that I have to use my laptop for such purpose, I would like to know what are the exact steps required to effectively connect it to the projector.
I have already asked some colleagues and attempted a few trials, but without success.
What's your advice?

ANSWER: Dear Joyce,
first of all take into account that the order in which you do things with computers and projectors does make a difference.
Some laptops, when switched on, check all the ports and connectors to see what has been connected to them. If the projector is not hooked up to your portable during startup, the laptop may not activate the external video connector.
In this light, it is recommended to follow the setup steps in this exact order:
- Connect your laptop to the projector with a standard VGA cable.
- Turn on the projector, let it warm up and select the proper computer input using the projector's control panel (either on board or via the optional remote control).
- Turn on the laptop. (By the way, I suggest you to bring the AC power adapter for your laptop and keep it plugged in during your presentation. This way you can safely avpid that the laptop goes into sleep or power-save-mode during your presentation.
- Set your laptop screen to the correct resolution (.e.g.: 800x600). Most projectors will adjust to most any resolution to fit the screen, but this may not be the case with the one you will be using. Beyond a certain reoslution the projector may display a distorted image or fail to display an image altogether. Also the quality and definition of the displayed image will be best when the projector is running at its native resolution. For most of today’s projectors, the recommended resolution is either 800x600 for low-cost models or 1024x768 for more expensive ones.
- Finally, if you are on a laptop, find the key marked "Fn" (or: "FUNCTION") on your laptop's keyboard. Hold it down while you hit the F5 or F6 function key which should also be marked with an LCD/monitor icon or with the writing LCD/CRT. The key combination
- Press and hold both the FUNCTION and the LCD/CRT keys. Whenever this combination is pressed, the laptop should alternate the screen image through the following cycle: Image on Laptop Screen, then Image on Projector, then Image on Both.
Do not forget to bring with you a plug adapter since in Germany they use the so-called "Schuko" power plugs and sockets (as in France).
