Fix PowerPoint Playback Problems

Many people complain that their presentation doesn’t play as designed when played on another computer.

Playback problems can include animations and transitions are no longer synchronized with a sound file, jerky sound, or a movie that refuses to play.

Problems result from how PowerPoint is designed; PowerPoint does not automatically synchronize sound and animation, for example.

Many problems result because the computer running the presentation simply runs out of resources to play all of the multimedia elements.

Moving the presentation from your computer where you created it to another computer can uncover problems resulting from the difference between the two computers.

Some possible problems, what causes them, and how to correct them are listed below.

On computer where presentation created

Media plays poorly or is of low quality

  • Available memory insufficient

  • Background programs using up resources

  • Fragmented hard drive

  • Disk too full for virtual memory to operate sufficiently

Solutions:

Close all unnecessary programs

Open Task Manager to identify and close background programs

Defragment the hard drive

Run Disk Cleanup to free space on the hard drive; clean up temp
folder; compress unneeded files; backup and remove old files

Buy more memory

Animations run poorly or not at all

  • Animations too complex

  • Too many complex slides follow one another

  • Slow image download

Solutions:

Simplify animations

Have previous and following slide after a complex animation
contain no media

Optimize images outside PowerPoint to reduce size

Media does not play at all

  • Wrong version of DirectX installed

  • Outdated or wrong codex installed

Solutions:

Update DirectX from Microsoft.com Download Center

install the correct codex

Played on a different computer

Media plays differently or poorly

  • Microprocessor is slower

  • Less capable video card

Solutions:

Use a computer with the same speed microprocessor

Use a computer with an equally capable video card

Media does not play at all

  • Wrong version of DirectX installed

  • Outdated or wrong codex installed

Solution:

Update DirectX from Microsoft.com Download Center.

Played on a CD or DVD

Media plays more slowly

  • CD/DVD plays slower than hard drive

Solution: Move to hard drive of computer.

  • Links to media are to wrong path

  • Media not on CD

Solutions:

Check links and edit to point to correct path.
