Presentation Delivery: Innovative Slide Show Presentation Approach Via Tiltable Hand-Held Gizmo

A new approach to deliver PowerPoint presentations and similar slide shows is the results of some innovative research and prototyping done by Schulze & Webb Ltd, a UK design consultancy in London, offering interaction design services and prototyping in hardware and software.

Here is a short video demonstration of this innovative slide show delivery approach which takes advantage of a custom written software working in tandem with a handheld gizmo. By tilting the handheld gizmo you easily move through the a grid of slides that you have pre-arranged. Check it out:

Here some background info on this very interesting prototype:

Regular presentation software (like PowerPoint) makes you put your slides in a line and move forward and back.

The guys at Schulze & Webb took the slides to be laid out on a grid instead, and developed software to move up, down, left and right through them. The software is controlled by a handheld accelerometer.

The presentation slides are prepared as for any presentation—in this case using Apple Keynote. Then two things need to happen:

* The slides need to be arranged in a grid
* During the presentation, the correct transition (up, down, left or right) needs to be shown when the presenter moves around the grid

Schulze & Webb new software was custom-written in Max MSP, a live video composition programming environment. This software takes the folder of images and the grid and shows the correct transitions to move from slide to slide.

Finally the remote control.

For now the selection has fallen on a handheld accelerometer placed on a PCB. "The accelerometer hooks in the laptop and registers tilts forward and back, left and right. A small script on the computer then translates these tilts to movement around the grid (inhibiting movement if a transition has just been made) and instructs the Max MSP presentation software accordingly."
