Online Presentations Go Totally Multimedia: Splashcast
While recently reviewing the latest Splashcast release over at Master New Media it dawned on me just how versatile a tool this really is for online presenters. For while Slideshare has risen to prominence for making it possible to share your PowerPoint decks online (without sound), Splashcast goes well beyond this basic functionality.
If you want a web-based application that will allow you to upload your PowerPoint slides, rearrange them online, add audio narration and / or a musical soundtrack, and mix them in with documents like PDFs, online video, your own webcamera straight-to-camera speaking, audio files, online video and now the contents of any RSS feed Splashcast strikes me as a great option for sharing your presentations online.
Forget about making your audience click through totally static, silent bite-sized presentation slides - that really doesn't constitute a presentation in my book. You can make your whole presentation come to life and reflect (and even enhance) the experience of watching it in a live setting, which Slideshare is a long way off from doing.
In this capsule review I show you Splashcast in action, delivering a truly multimedia presentation, and take you through the other possibilities that open up with its extensive functionality.
Here are the details:

I'll let the evidence speak for itself. Here is a presentation delivered using Splashcast that perfectly illustrates its audio, soundtracking, PowerPoint and web video capabilities:
Features list
Splashcast is nothing if not versatile, and manages to pack a great many features into both the browser-based application you do your presentation authoring from, and the embeddable media player that you can place on any website, like the one above.
For a full list of Splashcast's capabilities, you might want to check out my recent review of the service from earlier this week.
Here are the main features in brief: - Create your own channels and shows in an embeddable multimedia player that you can resize to your heart's content
- Shift between different media in a single show, so that you can have a PowerPoint slide followed by a video, throw in a PDF of photo from Flickr, return to your next slide, and so on
- Record both video and audio right from your browser, so that you can add your own commentary over your slides, images and videos, and even record your own speech right from your web camera
- Bring in media RSS feeds of online videos and podcasts, and have them display right in your player, within your custom playlist
- Import image files, document files, PowerPoint files, video files, audio files - pretty much any files and easily put them together to make presentations
So next time you are thinking about putting your presentation online, it would be well worth giving Splashcast a try. Great presentations, as you know, are visual, engaging experiences. Splashcast is truly one of the first free web-based tools I have seen that gives you anywhere near the rich experience of a real, live presentation.
